The Concierge Recommends

Located inside the chilly volcano rain forest, the lodge promotes its International Fireplace of Friendship - hokey, but it was established when the building was a YMCA in the '30s. It's a good place to warm up after exploring the hot and cold lava of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park a mile away.

Owner and chef Albert Jeyte, who was an Emmy-winning makeup artist for Magnum, P.I. in another life, has also established a surprisingly good restaurant. Who knew you could get a German sausage plate in Hawaii?

More cozy than luxurious, the 14 unique rooms and stand-alone cottages are, nonetheless, completely charming. Some accommodations have a fireplace, and all have access to a hot tub. Golf aficionados should book the two-bedroom Pii Mauna, located on the sixth fairway of the Volcano Golf Course (a short distance from the main grounds).

Fellowship Fireplace
Fireplace of Friendship built in 1938.
After a hard day of hiking the trails of Volcano, nothing beats a good dinner at Kilauea Lodge Restaurant. A relaxing interior of hardwood floors, koa tables, fresh flowers, original art and, at the center of it all, the historic Fireplace of Friendship with its precious collection of artifacts, provide the setting for fabulous dinners served nightly.

In October 1938, four hundred people from around the Territory of Hawaii gathered at Camp Hale O Aloha in Volcano Village for the dedication of a unique fireplace. The International Fireplace of Friendship with its stones and coins from all over the world was the inspiration of Harold Lucas, the Y.M.C.A. camp director in charge of construction at Camp Hale O Aloha. Lucas's dream was to create a hearth of world brotherhood using stones from 32 countries around the world.

Webmasters Favorite:

Kilauea Lodge is my favorite restaurant on the island - with no exceptions. However, for a long time my primary problem was that I couldn't decide what to eat from my favorite selections. That's why I now take advantage of ordering TWO of my favorites entrees on one plate at a discounted rate. My personal recommendation? The glazed Duck L'Orange along with the Cajun style Ahi (tuna prepared VERY rare in cajun spices) smothered in Papaya salsa. It's a GREAT combination! -David Cook
